The Open Doors project supports museums, libraries and archives to develop new adult audiences. Skills for Life refers to the 1 in 5 adults in the UK who have difficulties with literacy and numeracy. Museums, libraries and archives have the potential to attract new adult learners, signpost adults to Skills for Life provision, and to support learners and tutors to engage in exciting and innovative literacy and numeracy activities using the rich resources of museums, libraries and archives.

Aims of the Open Doors project

  1. Promote a better understanding of the National Strategy for Adult Literacy, Numeracy and Language amongst staff in museums, libraries and archives
  2. Promote better understanding of the role museums, archives and libraries can play in stimulating and supporting adult learners
  3. Develop approaches to measure the impact museums, archives and libraries have on people's literacy, numeracy and language skills
  4. Develop sustainable partnerships within the region between the adult education sector, cultural sectors and other related partners.
