Air raid shelter in the People's War Gallery

Air raid shelter in the People's War Gallery

North Lincolnshire Museum developed a new, interactive and user-friendly gallery based on the 2nd World War last year.

To help them develop the new gallery, museum staff attended a Basic Skills seminar. Text for the panels in the new gallery was discussed and developed. All text in the new gallery is below level 2. As well as text panels and conventional displays the new gallery uses touch screen technology and an interactive Anderson shelter to aid interpretation.

Members of the public were also involved in the development of the gallery, including secondary school children and older people.

The new gallery provides a resource for local Skills for Life tutors, and North Lincolnshire Museum staff hope to develop these links in the future. Designing the gallery also proved a learning experience for museum staff, who now feel they have a better understanding of Skills for Life, and more confidence to work with Skills for Life learners.

North Lincolnshire Museum staff comment:

“Some of the sentences I considered to be simple still had too many words with too many syllables”

Participant’s comment:

“By talking to the people from that time we learnt more than we ever could from books or even teachers, because we got to see into people's minds”.
