Kirklees Skills for Life library pack

Kirklees Libraries were keen to develop library based activities for Skills for Life students. An MLA Yorkshire grant enabled a team (which included a Skills for Life tutor) to spend time consulting with learners, and developing activities based on this consultation.

During the consultation learners said they wanted to know how a library was organised. Students had some awareness of how to join the library, but there was confusion regarding fines, costs and what resources are held in a library.

The project team decided to devise a pack which focussed on practical activities encouraging the students to move around the library, select books and discuss resources. The activities would be hands-on with very little writing. Activities were developed around Dewey, reading for pleasure, finding information, costs and fines and using online resources. The activities will be delivered by a library member of staff or a Skills for Life tutor (or a tutor and library member of staff working together).

It is hoped that the pack will widen access to library resources and demonstrate the relevance of the library to Skills for Life students. Future plans include to raise awareness of the pack among library and college staff by offering training sessions, and planning additional inserts and activities for the pack.

Library staff comments:

"The project was a wonderful way to develop a resource in partnership with staff from the local college. There was a real sharing of ideas and some strong links were made."
