Museum Pathways
Yorkshire Waterways Museum
Inside the Yorkshire Waterways Museum
The Yorkshire Waterways Museum provided work placements for 21 adults including resettling prisoners and the long term unemployed, over a number of months.
Activities included working with school groups and the public in the museum galleries, providing guided tours, caring for the objects in the collection and writing museum quizzes and learning materials. Learners also kept a learning journal.
In addition, learners took part in formal training, including first aid and health and safety.
Evaluation showed that learners enjoyed their work placements very much, gained a great deal of confidence and skills including communication skills and team working skills.
Comments from the project report
"100% of participants enjoyed the experience and fed this back through their student portfolios and through punctual and regular attendance."
"13 participants who were either serving a custodial sentence or had been unemployed for some time gained qualifications whilst the others gained work experience and increased their confidence and self esteem.”
