Skills for Life through Family History

Family history taster at Preston Road Community Centre, Hull

Family history taster at Preston Road Community Centre, Hull

In partnership with Preston Road NDC, Hull History Service took family history into the community, by running a series of taster sessions. The sessions provided an introduction on how to research family history, including using family trees, visiting websites, and buying family records online.

Evaluation of these sessions showed that they were a huge success. Most of the people attending the sessions had not been involved in further education (82%) or family history (65%) before, and a significant proportion had not used a computer before (35%). Following the sessions, 100% of learners felt that they would be interested in doing family history again, and would be interested in attending more day schools in the future. The local family history society also gained 8 new members as a result of the taster sessions.

Following the success of these sessions, Hull History Service is running similar events in other communities in Hull.

Archive staff comment:

“There is clearly a great deal of interest in family history irrespective of social background. It has confirmed our belief that there is an interest, even a market, in our more deprived wards, and that these courses can and do help people learn, and inspire them to continue research themselves.”
