Literacy learners visit York Castle Museum
There are a number of staff training options to consider, when planning to use museum, library and archive (mla) resources with Skills for Life learners.
Museum, library and archives (mla) staff play a number of roles in supporting Skills for Life learners and tutors. For example:
· Providing information and guidance to the public
· Signposting public to learning opportunities
· Running taster and information activities for Skills for Life learners
· Working with Skills for Life tutors to provide activities / trips / courses
· Developing learning resources for use by tutors or learners
· Offering buildings, collections and resources for use by Skills for Life tutors or learners
Therefore, staff will need different training depending on the role they plan to play in Skills for Life learning.
As a starting point, mla staff need:
· Awareness and understanding of Skills for Life issues
· Knowledge of the Skills for Life agenda
· Confidence to work with new audiences
After this, the next step is more specific training, coupled with ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities. For more information, MLA Yorkshire has produced some Skills for LIfe training recommendations [48.5kb], guidelines for Skills for Life training appropriate for mla staff working with Skills for Life learners in different ways.
There are a series of Skills for Life qualifications available at different levels. Many mla staff choose to take the City and Guilds 9295 unit 1 qualification in Adult Learner Support. See the City and Guilds 9295 Qualification page for more information.
A tailored version of the 9295 unit 1 course, especially for mla staff, has been developed by MLA Yorkshire in partnership with PdNet and Hull Skills for Life resource centre. This course is currently being pilotted, and will be available to download from the Open Doors website after pilotting. Please contact us for more information.
mla staff also qualify to attend Skills for Life professional development training provided through the Learning and Skills Council. All Skills for Life training opportunities are listed on Skills for Life Network website, in the calendar section.
Training courses for museum, library and archive staff on various different areas of working with Skills for Life are run by MLA Yorkshire. Check the latest news for course announcements, or contact us to discuss running a course within your organisation.
