Mapping to the Curriculum

Several museums, libraries and archives (mla) in Yorkshire have already produced learning resources designed to be used by tutors or mla staff with groups of learners.

These resources can include worksheets, ideas for topic work, discussion prompts, activities to take place in the mla, and activities to take place before and after a visit. Resources can cover a two hour visit or a term's work.

Many of the existing activities that already take place in mlas may support literacy and numeracy learning. See the following documents for some ideas of how mla activities could map to the literacy and numeracy adult core curriculum:

Examples of the resources available include:

  • An activity pack and beginner’s guide to exploring family history using Rotherham archives, mapped to the literacy curriculum.
  • A resource pack for exploring Leeds central library and art gallery, mapped to the ESOL curriculum, which is particularly useful for supporting the citizenship curriculum. See

It is useful to look at what has been produced by other mlas if you are thinking about creating these types of resources. Examples of some of this work are available in the Learning Resources Library.

Learning resources are best produced in partnership between mla and Skills for Life professionals, who will each contribute their own expertise to the resource. Other considerations are:

  • How will you ensure local tutors know about the resources and use them?
  • How will you map the resources to the Adult Core Curriculum?
  • Who will champion the resources within the museum, library or archive?
  • Who is the pack intended for (learners / tutors / mla staff)?
  • What is the target audience of the pack (age group / skills levels)?
  • Is the pack for use on site, in class or both?
  • What additional resources or facilities could mlas offer Skills for Life learners to complement the pack?
